First political party

‘Nepal Praja Parishad’ founded on June 2, 1936, was the first political party of Nepal. Headed by Tanka Prasad Acharya, the party had determined with the single mission to throw the autocratic rule of the Ranas.

Birth of the first Nepali political party outside the country

'Akhil Bharatiya Nepali Rashtriya Congress' was formed in Banaras in September 19448. The president and the acting president were Subba Devi Prasad Sapkota and Bisweshwor Prasad Koirala, respectively.

Foundation of the first full- fledged mass party

A conference held on 25-26 January 1947 at Khalsa High School, Calcutta (Kolkata) announced the foundation of Nepali Congress. A joint meet of Nepali Rashtriya Congress led by BP Koirala and Nepal Prajatantra Congress led by Suvarna Shamsher, on April 9, 1950 at the Tiger Hall in Calcutta declared a new party named Nepali Congress and Matrika Prasad Koirala as its first president.

Foundation of the Communist Party of Nepal

Nepal Communist Party was founded on September 15, 1949; Puspalal Shrestha became the founder general secretary.

Judiciary Records of Nepal

First recorded civil code and procedural code in the world

'Nyaya Vikashini', a book written by King Jayasthiti Malla in 1380 who had become the ruler of the then Nepal Mandal (Kathmandu valley) from 1380 to 1395, had proceeded the first civil code in his kingdom. It has all the required written evidence to claim itself as the first civil code and procedural code of the world. Comparing it to the Civil Code (1804) and the Procedure Code (1806) by Napoleon Bonaparte of France, known to be the first civil codes of the world, Nepal's civil code is 500 years older. Written on palm leaves in Sanskrit and Nepal Bhasha, this is kept in the National Archives.

First pilot doctrine for the state policy in the world

'Divya Upadesh', a set of doctrines as guidelines for the state policy of the then newly unified Kingdom of Nepal was narrated by the nation's unifier, King Prithvinarayan Shah (1732-1774) in 1774. In comparison to this, the dogmas on the state policy proclaimed in the constitution of Ireland as known the first pilot doctrine in the world came into practice only in July 1, 1937.

Establishment of Pradhan Nyayalaya as the Apex Court

Rana Premier Juddha Shamsher established Pradhan Nyayalaya as the Apex Court on July 15, 1940.

First chief justice

Hari Prasad Pradhan served as the first Chief Justice of the Apex Court, then the Pradhan Nyayalaya from July 22 1951 to May 20, 1956.

Youngest chief justice

Aniruddha Prasad Singh was 34 years when he was appointed the chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1956.

Longest serving chief justice

Nayan Bahadur Khatri rendered his service as the chief justice from August 7, 1976 to December 9, 1985.

First female chief justice

Sushila Karki took oath as the first female chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal on July 11, 2016.

First female justice

Shushila Singh Shilu' was the first lady justice in the Supreme Court.

First registered professional lawyer

Dev Raj Vama, later senior advocate, became the first registered professional lawyer on October 23, 1956.

First registered woman lawyer

Shanti Devi Thapa Chhetri was registered as the first woman professional lawyer on June 26, 1960.

Highest number of plaintiffs against a single defendant

As more as 18000 cases were filed against Netra Bikram Thapa, the then chairman of 'Ban Sudridhikaran Aayog', the Commission for the Solidification of Forests.

Court's single order to arrest most number of accused

The Appellate Court Patan issued an arrest warrant against 528 people including the Maoist ChairmanPrachanda and Vice chairman, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai accused of being indulged in the 'Sindhuli Attack' during the Maoist insurgency.

Highest number of single day case decisions by a single bench of Judge

The single bench of Hem Raj Pant, the then judge at the Bardiya District Court, accomplished a record number of court verdict over 115 cases on February 15, 2003.

Single case filed by the highest number of people

As many as 507 people sued the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) for its act of tax imposition in the Hanumandhoka Durbar Square at the Supreme Court on October 12, 2001.

Longest serving attorney general

Shambhu Prasad Gyawali was the longest tenured attorney general serving from August 27, 1959 to December 10, 1970.
